Distributed Vibration Solution Eliminates Frame Cracking in Concrete Moulds

Industrial Vibrators

Smart vibration design enhances precast performance through shared expertise.

When McDonald Concrete Group (MCG), based in Whanganui, sought to optimise the performance of a mould used in the production of concrete lids, it presented an opportunity to improve both structural durability and operating conditions through a more refined vibration approach.

The existing system relied on a single Oli HFP 2700C Pneumatic Vibrator, which delivered the required compaction force. However, concentrating vibration energy in one location can, over time, place unnecessary stress on supporting structures and contribute to higher noise levels within the plant.

During a routine visit to supply spare parts for the existing vibrator, SOCO’s Area Sales Representative, Regan Currie, was shown the mould setup by MCG. After seeing the extent of cracking in the welds, Regan remarked that there had to be a better way to vibrate the lid and began considering alternative approaches.

McDonald Concrete Group cracking in mould frame

Recognising this, SOCO Ltd, based in Palmerston North, supplied and sourced the OLI pneumatic vibrators for McDonald Concrete Group, working closely with the customer to assess the application and develop a more effective vibration solution. After reviewing the issues they were experiencing, SOCO proposed a distributed vibration approach in place of the original single vibrator configuration.

The solution involved replacing the single unit with two Oli HFP 1400P Pneumatic Vibrators, strategically mounted opposite each other on the mould assembly. This configuration allowed vibration energy to be evenly distributed across the mould, delivering consistent compaction while avoiding the concentration of force in a single area.

Rubber buffers were incorporated into the installation to mount the vibrators off the steel framework. This helped isolate vibration transfer, reducing structural loading and supporting long‑term equipment integrity.

The results were immediate and highly positive. The mould framework was no longer subjected to concentrated stress, noise levels were reduced substantially, and operators benefited from a more comfortable working environment. Importantly, the quality and consistency of the finished concrete lids remained high, demonstrating the effectiveness of the revised approach.

“Sometimes the solution isn’t more vibration, but better applied vibration,” said Regan Currie. “By working closely with the customer and utilising Oli equipment in a different configuration, we were able to achieve a far more balanced and efficient outcome.”

During commissioning, it became clear that the dual‑vibrator setup required additional compressed air capacity. MCG addressed this by increasing air supply and adding receiver capacity, ensuring smooth and reliable operation.

This project highlights the value of combining trusted Oli products with the application expertise and customer support of SOCO Ltd. Through a shared and considered approach, MCG now benefits from a robust, long-term solution that improves both plant performance and operational reliability.

MagBase Allows Vibration Without Permanent Installation

Industrial Vibrators

The MagBase magnetic vibrator mounting bracket is a portable mounting frame designed for use with OLI OR100 and OT36S pneumatic vibrators. It allows a vibrator to be quickly installed, removed and relocated wherever additional vibration is required, without drilling, welding or permanent modifications.

When material conditions change due to moisture, compaction or product variation, a MagBase fitted with an OLI pneumatic vibrator provides additional vibration to help maintain material flow.

How MagBase works

MagBase is a portable magnetic mounting bracket. An OLI OR100 or OT36S pneumatic vibrator is bolted to the bracket, allowing the complete assembly to be magnetically attached to ferromagnetic steel equipment. When vibration is no longer required, the assembly can be removed and relocated without permanent modifications to the equipment.

MagBase isncludes the magnetic mounting bracket only. OLI pneumatic vibrators are selected separately to suit your application.

A portable solution for changing material conditions

Material flow problems are often intermittent. Bins and hoppers may discharge normally under standard conditions but require additional vibration when materials become damp, compacted or difficult to discharge.

This additional vibration option reduces the need to manually strike equipment to free material.

Applications include:

  • Bins and hoppers with intermittent flow issues
  • Silos and storage vessels
  • Transfer chutes
  • Mobile or relocatable bins
  • Concrete moulds and formwork

One vibrator. Multiple locations.

A single OLI vibrator can be used across multiple areas of a site, providing flexibility where vibration requirements change.

The portable design makes it suitable for use with mobile compressed air setups, including compressors mounted on service vehicles, trailers or portable units.

Improve flow without permanent modifications

Bridging, rat holing and material build up can restrict product flow and reduce productivity.

MagBase provides a quick and controlled way to add vibration to assist material movement, reducing manual intervention and unnecessary modifications to equipment.

Choosing the right vibrator location

The effectiveness of vibration depends on where it is applied. MagBase allows users to trial different mounting positions to identify where vibration provides the best results.

This allows users to determine:

  • The most effective vibrator location
  • The best mounting position for different materials
  • Whether a portable or permanent solution is most suitable

Durable magnetic mounting design

Manufactured from 304 stainless steel, MagBase is designed for reliable use in industrial environments.

The high strength rare earth magnetic mounting system securely attaches to ferromagnetic steel surfaces while allowing quick installation, removal and repositioning of the vibrator assembly.

Features include:

  • Durable 304 stainless steel frame
  • Two high strength rare earth magnets
  • Secure mounting without drilling or welding
  • Quick relocation between applications
  • Suitable for OLI OR100 and OT36S pneumatic vibrators
  • Requires filtered, dry compressed air supply

Suitable OLI pneumatic vibrators

MagBase is designed to suit the following OLI pneumatic vibrators:

OR100 Rotary Pneumatic Vibrator

  • General purpose vibration for bins, hoppers and chutes
  • Suitable for most material flow applications

OT36S Turbine Pneumatic Vibrator

  • High frequency vibration
  • Well suited to concrete compaction, moulds and fine or cohesive materials

Portable vibration support when needed

Whether assisting difficult to flow materials or adding vibration to mobile equipment, MagBase allows vibration to be applied without permanent vibrator installation.
